There is just something about a first birthday session that feels extra meaningful.
Maybe it is the way parents walk in remembering their newborn session, now watching their baby sit, laugh, reach, and explore. Maybe it is the tiny personality that shows up so clearly at this stage. Or maybe it is the way we get to celebrate an entire year of life in one joyful, messy, beautiful moment.
This strawberry-themed first birthday cake smash session in my Shreveport studio was exactly that.
One of the most special parts of this session was that I also got to photograph Emily’s Mama for her maternity session and then I also got to see Emily for her Fresh 48, Newborn, four month, eight month and now her first birthday!
From the very beginning, everything about this session was soft, feminine, and playful. The color palette stayed consistent with warm pinks, soft neutrals, and pops of red from the strawberries, creating a timeless but still whimsical look.
We started with simple milestone portraits.
Baby girl wore a delicate pink tulle dress with strawberry details, sitting on the studio floor with fresh strawberries scattered around her. These images are always some of my favorites because they capture the curiosity and sweetness of this age without distraction. Just baby, light, and a few thoughtful details.
As she explored, you could see her personality come out more and more. The smiles, the little reaches, the way she looked up with those bright eyes. This is the stage parents never want to forget, and these images hold onto it.
Then we moved into a more styled setup.
A vintage high chair decorated with soft ribbons and a strawberry balloon garland added depth and storytelling to the session. This part of the gallery gives variety while still keeping everything cohesive. It feels like a celebration without being overwhelming.
And then, the moment everyone waits for… the cake smash.
Her strawberry cake was the perfect centerpiece. Soft pink icing, delicate piping, and tiny strawberry details tied everything together beautifully. At first, she approached it carefully, unsure of what to do.
Then came the first taste.
